On a frigid day in February in western Nebraska, I noticed this cottonwood tree from the roadway while driving past on my way to another location. So I locked my truck in four-wheel drive and plowed through the heavy snow to get to where I thought I could make the image—getting closer to the tree.
I set up my tripod and waited. I could see Fog rolling through the forest, thicker, obscuring the background as the air temperature began to warm. I made three images. This one became my favorite as it detailed more of the foreground, which I had to fiddle with when framing the scene due to only having a 50mm lens and very little room to retreat from the subject.
