Mount Richthofen Storm

SKU: Mount Richthofen Storm II

Hawk Buckman™ Black & White Film Collection
(Black and White Landscape Photograph)

The morning was crushingly cold as I traveled west of Fort Collins, Colorado, heading toward Cameron Peak in Jackson County on December 12, 2017. Traveling through the Cache la Poudre Canyon at 4:00 am is an otherworldly experience. Still, I needed to get to my destination if I was going to beat a developing winter storm on the western slope.

I knew the storm would form early in the morning and create a dramatic sky that I was bent on capturing. Finally, I arrived at Cameron Pass, where the temperature on the dashboard of my car read -15 degrees. I made three images of the Nokhu Crags and then traveled another 5 miles to a pull-out on the side of the road right in the middle of an avalanche area.

Witnessing the wind whipping the snow on the peak of Mount Richthofen and Static Peak in the Never Summer Wilderness, I decided to climb up the hill to reach a higher vantage point to make this image. No sooner had I got to the spot where I thought I was stable; than my feet came out from under me, and I found myself rolling down the hillside back to the road upside down and gasping for breath. It was worth it. Would I do it again? No.
