In December of 2017, I made a trip to Jackson County, Colorado, to see a fellow photographer and Park Ranger who had written me to say that there were foxes in the area of Gould at the Moose Headquarters. She noted that a silver fox (a red fox of a North American variety that has black fur with white tips) was in the area with its mate, a red-colored fox.
I spent most of the day in the high country, and, as evening approached, I headed into Gould to see my friends and see if I could spot the silver fox, of which I wanted an image. When I arrived at Moose Headquarters, my friends and I were visiting when a Ranger came into the building and told us that the silver fox was across the road in a field hunting voles. Excited, I headed towards the area. I had yet to walk 35 feet when its mate, the red fox pictured, crossed the parking lot and went into an adjacent field. She paused her mission as I raised the camera lens. I made about ten images. Of them, only three were usable. This one was the best of the lot.
I consider this image a failure. I couldn’t clear the grass obscuring the foreground and refused to edit it in Photoshop. It wouldn’t be a photograph if I did. Instead, it would be a graphic.
Images inside a proof collection are associated with a limited edition collection. However, this image is not since I consider it a memory rather than a work of art.
