In 2003 I shifted my attention to the natural world with my camera and interest in photography. By the summer of 2004, I had acquired the needed lenses and cameras to enter the natural world, so I made several trips to North Texas and southern Oklahoma to discover the southern plains. I was still using film and film cameras due to the cost of the, at that time, substandard digital format. I shot hundreds of rolls of film with a Nikon F5 camera that I still own. This image was one of the first I made while exploring the world of the Black-tailed prairie dog and its environment. Since then, the Black-tailed Prarie dog has become one of my favorite animals due to their community and lasting bonds within their families. This image is nostalgic to me. It reminds me of a time when all things were possible, and much like prairie dogs, the love of my family was most important.
This image was created using Kodak Ektachrome E100VS. 24’X16′ is the largest it will print without distortion.
